John Deere Gator heavy-duty utility vehicles are popular for good reason. Both the XUV 835 and the XUV 865 are built to put in a hard day's work. However, the factory seats can take a beating from mud, tools, and everyday wear.
At Black Mountain All Terrain, we know that protecting your utility vehicle protects your investment. We are proud to manufacture premium, custom-fit seat covers that bring military-grade durability directly to your machine.
To ensure you get a flawless, tailored fit right in your shop, Kyle from Black Mountain All Terrain has put together a comprehensive installation video to guide you through the process. Below is a breakdown of what you will learn from the video and how you can upgrade your Gator's interior using just a few basic hand tools.
Watch the Walkthrough: John Deere Gator™ XUV 835 & XUV 865 Installation
The John Deere Gator XUV 835 and 865 feature a unique seating layout compared to other heavy-duty utility vehicles: a 60/40 split-bench setup featuring a separate driver’s seat alongside a larger passenger bench designed to maximize cabin space.
Tools Required
A 13mm socket and wrench
A 10mm socket and wrench
A pair of pliers
Phase 1: Driver's Seat Installation
The installation kicks off with the independent driver's seat, which can be easily unbolted.
Remove the Seat: Rotate the driver’s seat forward to expose the four mounting bolts on the back side. Use your 13mm socket or wrench to loosen them.
Fit the Fabric: Move the seat to a clear workspace. Unzip the custom seat bottom cover and slide it over the cushion like a pillowcase. Flip it over, close the heavy-duty zipper, and secure the velcro.
Wrap the Backrest: Repeat the same process for the driver's backrest cushion. Slide the cover on, pull it tight, close the zipper, and secure the velcro.
Kyle's Pro-Tip: Because our covers are precision-engineered to form-fit the exact contours of the factory foam, don't be afraid to firmly twist, pull, or adjust the fabric to line up the seams for a smooth finish.
Reinstall: Place the driver's seat back into the cab, start the four 13mm bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading, and tighten them down with your wrench.
Phase 2: Passenger Split-Bench Installation
The passenger side features a two-part setup, which requires you to separate the bottom seat base from the backrest. Kyle walks through the specific tricks needed depending on your exact cab package.
Remove the Bottom Base: Pivot the passenger seat base forward. Use your pliers to pull the two cotter pins, slide out the large main pivot pin, and lift the seat base completely free from the vehicle.
The Cab Configuration Trick: For the passenger backrest, your approach depends on your UTV model:
Open Cab / E-Models: There is plenty of open clearance behind the seat back, allowing you to slide the cover directly on over the backrest without removing the frame.
Enclosed Cab / M & R-Models: Because of the tight clearance against the rear trim panel, you’ll need to unbolt the backrest frame. Use your 10mm socket to remove the four small bolts (two on each side of the seatbelt). Then lift up on the loose frame to slide it out.
Apply the Covers: Open the zippers and velcro tracks on your passenger covers. Slide the large backrest cover over the frame, zip it closed, and seal the velcro. For the bottom seat base, slide the cover on and make sure that the pre-cut openings line up with the mounting pins and rear support feet before closing the zipper.
Final Assembly: Reinstall the passenger backrest by sliding the frame back into position and bolting in the four bolts. Finish by dropping the passenger seat base back into place, sliding the main pivot pin in, and locking it down with the two cotter pins.
